My plan [18 Jan 2006]: Invertebrates
This is a list of animals that I wish to keep in the tank. This will change
as more species will become more of less available.
Invertebrates: Need to be kept in an environment almost
free from copper. To much copper will kill any invertebrate or all in aquarium.
It is very important to test your aquarium and tap water for this heavy
metal (class B metal).
Copper is harmless below 0.05 p.p.m. (parts per million). EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) in some conditioners made for the aquarium binds copper and makes most the copper harmless Another good way to avoid adding copper is to filter it. I will provide more information on this at a later time.
- Neritina reclivata:Known as the Olive Nerite Snail. Very well known in the saltwater aquarium trade for eating unwanted algae even in the smallest areas. Will not reproduce in freshwater but will lay eggs, which can will not hatch unless in brackish water. Know not to eat plants. [ count: 8 ] Photo from usgs.gov
- Neocaridina denticulata: Known as the Red Cherry Shrimp: will not grow more then one inch. Eats hair algae, and are detritus feeders. Color: bright red, with small amount of white. I will make a great addition to my aquarium. [ count 4 ]
- Caridina japonica: Known as the Amano Shrimp: will not grow under 2 inches. Only limited to eating hair algae, and are detritus feeders. Color: almost clear. [ count 3 ]
- Corbicula fluminea: Corbicula are a species native to southeast Asia, which can live in cold or warm in environments. Known as the Golden Clam, they are about the size of a quarter. Great filter feeders; absorbs nutrients from the water. Lives in the substrate and found in may parts of the world, but I’m thinking about not keeping these mussels because they are nonnative-invasive to most parts in the world. A major problem in U.S. and World, because they can taking up natural resources that native clams need and many predators will not eat them. Please read more in hyperlinks.
